The process of selecting an item to reverse engineer, and render digitally has proven to be difficult because there is so much criteria I am looking for:
-The item must be manageable to measure all of its parts
-The item must be interesting, but no too difficult (given my skill level)
-The item must be dissectible
-And ideally look interesting after being digitally rendered
So here are three objects in the running...
Model Airplane:
If I could pull this off, I think this model airplane would look super cool put together in Rhino. It's a good small size and would be easy to mirror a lot of the design work. Although, I have several concerns. Some parts are slightly too small and would be very difficult to measure, it's impossible to take apart without breaking, and some of the gradual curves would be difficult to exactly duplicate. However, it would definitely be a good challenge.
Crescent Wrench:
This item would be fun to create because there is plenty of small details. There's a couple pieces to take apart, but I'm more interested in the grooves and divots of the exterior itself. The biggest challenge for me, with this object, I think would again be getting the gradual curves exactly right.
Wooden Chess Set:
Out of these three objects, this is the one I would be most excited to reverse engineer. Although it involves a lot of pretty basic shapes, there is also plenty of grooves, and angles to replicate. The exploded view in Rhino would be neat because it would show all of the individual pieces contained in the set. I think the most difficult part to recreate would be the knight (horse) piece. It has the most abnormal shapes and cut outs. Other than that, I think this object would be the most realistic choice because the shapes are mostly compatible with as my skill level.
